When I almost gave up on writing…

Today is the publication day of Cold Blood, the fifth book in my Erika Foster series. Publication days are always very exciting, and nerve wracking, knowing that this is the first time readers get to hold a copy in their hands. I spend the day wondering how many people are opening the book for the first time, and reading the words I’ve worked on so hard for the past few months. I hope that I haven’t let my readers down, because it’s readers who have given me the opportunity to write full-time, and for that I am forever grateful.

My first ever publication day was March 2012, in Slovakia, for a book called Mrcha Hollywood. It’s the Slovak language translation of my book Lost in Crazytown. It was an exciting, but rather terrifying day. My first ever book was being published, and I couldn’t even read it!

My first published book, and I couldn’t read it!

Late in 2011 I moved back from Los Angeles to live in Slovakia, with my Slovak husband Ján. I had been writing for several years with small amounts of success; I’d written some comedy sketches for a show which I performed in London, and I’d taken a play I’d written to the Edinburgh Festival. Early in 2010, I’d completed my first novel The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard and it had excited a literary agent enough for him to take me on. I came very close to a publication deal in the UK, only for it all to fall through and for the agent to lose interest. So in late 2011 we came to live with Ján’s mum in her small flat in Slovakia.

At this point I was at a very low ebb. I was about to give up writing and had started looking for work as an English language teacher. However, Ján encouraged me to keep going and write down some of the strange and crazy experiences we’d had in Hollywood. I wasn’t keen on writing a new book which would never see the light of day, but he persisted, and took me out to the local Chinese, where we started to talk through the our year in Los Angeles, and the more we talked, the more I saw it might make a good story. We worked out that the little money we had could last until January, so we might as well have one last roll of the dice.

I wrote furiously from October to December 2011, working 7 days a week, and at the same time, Ján translated it into Slovak. By Christmas we effectively had two books, one in English and one in Slovak. In early January of 2012, we submitted the manuscript to several publishers in Slovakia. My confidence had ebbed away over the holidays, and the January blues did nothing to help. I had a Skype interview scheduled for a job with an English language school, and was brushing up on the TEFL qualification I had taken the year before. I had zero expectations for our book, I knew it was good, but I had submitted work to editors and had been turned down so many times before.

Then, on Tuesday 17th January 2012, just as I was making a cheese toasty and contemplating the interview I had the following day, Ján came through to the kitchen and told me that one of the publishers we’d submitted the book to, had read the manuscript, loved it, and they wanted to publish it. Could we meet them in Bratislava the next afternoon!

I didn’t dare get too excited. The following morning, I did the Skype interview, which went well, then we took a snowy bus journey to Bratislava, and went to a small cafe just off the main square. The people from the publishing house were running late, and I thought at first that it was all a big joke, or that they had bailed on us. Then they arrived in a flurry of apologies and excited chatter. Coffee was ordered, and they said how much they loved the book, how funny it was, and how it would appeal to Slovak readers. They showed us a mock-up of the cover they had produced, and they said they wanted to publish it within the next six weeks! They also offered us an advance. It wasn’t a king’s ransom, just €500, but we were lucky enough to be living rent free, and the cost of living in Slovakia back then was very low, so it meant the wolf had, temporarily, left the door.

Me and Ján at the printer, seeing Mrcha Hollywood come hot off the press!

When I look back, so much of being a writer is about having belief. Belief in yourself and your ideas, belief from friends, a family member, or loved one. I spent so many years dreading being asked at a party what I did for a living. As an unpublished writer I’d often feel like a complete failure. Although, now I realise that I wasn’t. Every writer has to start somewhere. Every writer has to persevere against difficult conditions, where the odds feel stacked against them. I honestly thought I would never get published. It all seemed far out of reach. I was the last person who thought I would ever be able to make writing my full time job. I came close to giving up so many times. I dread to think what would have happened if I had!

So, back to the publication day… Mrcha Hollywood was published in March 2012 at a big launch event where I was interviewed by the press, where I signed books, and where I didn’t understand much of what was being said. They must have wondered who this rather  nonplussed new author was! We were featured in every newspaper and magazine, there was a poster campaign in bookshops; we even went on Breakfast TV in Slovakia. Mrcha Hollywood quickly became a bestseller.

Within weeks,  another publisher wanted to know if I had any books Ján could translate, so I dusted off the manuscript of  The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard, and they bought it, and also hired Ján to translate. I also bluffed a little at the meeting that I was writing a Coco Pinchard sequel, and they asked to buy that also! This was the push I needed to keep writing.

We weren’t rich, but it bought us valuable time to write, and I was able to turn down the teaching job I’d been offered. It was with this little boost of confidence that we decided to go ahead and self-publish the English language versions of The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard and Lost in Crazytown through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.

Since then, it’s been a steady but exhilarating ride. I’ve taken steps forward and I’ve suffered setbacks, but I’ve kept moving, and more importantly, I’ve kept writing. The more you write, the better you get, and if a reader likes one of your books, they will always want to read more. Readers are the most important people. Writers should never forget this.

The long journey to get here has made me appreciate so much. I appreciate my husband who has supported me all the way, we are a real team; Team Bryndza Books rules! And I appreciate every reader who has talked about my books to a friend or family member, and the wonderful community of book bloggers who support so many new authors on social media. And lastly thank you to Oliver Rhodes, Claire Bord and everyone at my fabulous publisher, Bookouture. You all have so much faith in me, and you’ve given me such creative freedom and a platform to flourish and develop my crime thriller series.

I wanted to write this blog post to say thank you, and to also say that whatever you want to do with your life, it’s possible as long as you work hard, dream big, and never give up!

Coco Pinchard 2 and 3 now available as audiobooks!

Hello everyone, I’m putting my head up for air, as I’ve been deep in the edits for Erika Foster book 5.

I know lots of writers say they’ve been in ‘the editing cave’, but I don’t like to call my little office a cave. It’s very cosy, with smooth walls, lots of light, and two furry puppy dogs who like to sleep at my feet. I wish I could tell you more about Erika Foster 5, as I’m having to call it for now (there is a title, and the cover is almost ready) but I am sworn to secrecy. Stand by for some news in the next couple of weeks!

I’m also very excited to tell you that Coco Pinchard’s Big Fat Tipsy Wedding and Coco Pinchard, The Consequences of Love and Sex are now both available as unabridged audiobooks. They are the second and third books in my Coco Pinchard series.

It’s been a lot of fun to hear the books read back to me. I haven’t looked at either book since I wrote them in 2013 and 2014, and quite a lot of the story I had forgotten, so it was quite odd to listen to the audio and wonder what would happen next! Jan Cramer is back narrating and has done me proud, I can’t wait for you to hear them.

Both unabridged audiobooks are available to download now, through Amazon Audible and iTunes worldwide. Next week we are going into production on the two Coco Pinchard Christmas novellas, A Very Coco Christmas and Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story and they should be available toward the end of August, so I will keep you posted.

The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard audiobook is now available!

I’m thrilled to let you all know first, that my romantic comedy novel, The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard is now available as an audiobook!

The audiobook version is narrated by the brilliant Jan Cramer, who voices the audio editions of my Erika Foster crime thriller series, and my stand-alone romantic comedy Miss Wrong and Mr Right. She has done a wonderful job bringing Coco and all the characters in the novel alive.

It has been a long-held dream to have my Coco Pinchard series produced as audiobooks, but I wanted to make sure they are completely faithful to the characters, so I have produced them myself through my own Team Bryndza Audiobooks imprint. We are now in production on the second book Coco Pinchard’s Big Fat Tipsy Wedding, which should also be available in the next few weeks.

You can download from Audible and iTunes at the links below, where you can also listen to a free 5 minute sample. I really hope you enjoy hearing all the characters come alive!

As always, I’d love to hear your feedback, and what you think of The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard audiobook. so please do drop me a line and say hello!

‘This was by far one of the funniest books I’ve read in the past year. Very ‘Bridget Jones’ but less stuffy and more ‘Sex and the City’ meets crazy family.’ Heather Smith, Amazon Reader

Coco Pinchard always dreamed of being a successful writer, but then life got in the way. She married young, had a son, and put her dreams on hold… But now she’s forty, and her first novel is about to be published! Her husband Daniel has greyed nicely into a silver fox, and her son Rosencrantz is all grown up. Shouldn’t it be time to enjoy life?

That is, until the annual family Christmas when her hideous in-laws come to stay, and Coco opens her gift from Daniel. It’s not the jewellery she chose, but an iPhone. This marks the start of Daniel’s mid-life crisis and Coco catches him in bed with a younger woman.

The iPhone becomes a confessional, and as Coco’s life unravels, she documents her seemingly endless (and often entertaining) run of bad luck through emails to loyal friends Christopher, an ageing trustafarian, and Marika, a slightly alcoholic schoolteacher.

Then Coco meets the hunky Adam and she’s back in the world of dating as a single forty-something. Read the emails that tell the heart warming and often hilarious tale of Coco picking up the pieces, in this fun, feel-good Romantic Comedy.

What people are saying about The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard

‘I couldn’t put it down. I literally laughed out loud several times… and who wouldn’t want to read through a stranger’s correspondence? Fabulous book.’ Noel, Amazon Reader

‘Fast moving, clips along with never a dull moment providing plenty of smiles, chuckles, and outright guffaws to a satisfyingly happy ending!‘ RavenWoman, Amazon Reader

‘So refreshing not to have a cliché rom-com where you know exactly how everything is going to pan out! If you want a great British comedy give this a read!‘ LL Colmer, Amazon Reader

‘I have a new favourite author! Bryndza tells the story as if you are sitting with your girlfriends exchanging bits of “wisdom”. The write up was correct. I do not often laugh-out-loud at books, but I sure did while reading this one!‘ Gail Joramo, Amazon Reader

‘You think you’ve got problems? Trust me, they are nothing compared to what Coco Pinchard has! And how the author of this marvel manages to achieve such a level of hilarity while Coco goes from one disaster to another is the mark of true creative genius. The first of a three book series, this novel, told totally in entertaining emails, is laugh-out-loud funny. Mayda, Amazon Reader

What an outstanding read!! I laughed, cried and cringed alongside Coco, the main character in this pacy story. I loved the way the tale unfolded through a succession of emails…a format that worked brilliantly!’ Amy, Amazon Reader

This book is just fab! Had me giggling out loud so many times. The sarcastic, subtle and genius sense of humour is just up my street. I think I know somebody just like all of the characters in the book, and/or have even been them at some point in my life, so could definitely relate!’ Mel, Amazon Reader

‘Loved this so much, funny and enjoyable. If you are going on holiday buy all three before you get to the beach or you will go nuts not being able to get the others before you get home. It is amazingly written by a man, who knew? Bryndza seems to be able to get into the head of women better than most other women. He has zeroed in on us and done it well!’ FeatherOnAWire, Amazon top 100 reviewer

Coco Pinchard is coming to audio

I’m so excited to tell you that my Coco Pinchard series of romantic comedy novel is coming to audio!

The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard has just started recording, and is narrated by the brilliant Jan Cramer, who voices my Erika Foster crime thriller series, and my stand-alone romantic comedy Miss Wrong and Mr Right.

Jan Cramer

We are going into production with ALL the books in the series. As well as the three full-length novels, The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard, Coco Pinchard’s Big Fat Tipsy Wedding, and Coco Pinchard, The Consequences of Love and Sex. We’ll be producing the two novellas, A Very Coco Christmas and Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story.

The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard should be available to download through Audible and iTunes worldwide at the beginning of June, with the rest of the books following every few weeks. As soon as recording is complete on each one, they will be uploaded.

It has been a long-held dream of mine to have the Coco Pinchard series produced as audiobooks, but I wanted to make sure they are completely faithful to the characters, so I am producing them through my own Team Bryndza Audiobooks imprint.

I’ve spent this last week emailing back and forth and on the phone with the lovely Ms Cramer, finalising voices for all the characters. I listened to the first half an hour of The Not So Secret Emails last night and got quite emotional. Coco sounds just as I imagined her, as well as Ethel, Meryl, and Tony… Rosencrantz, they are all brilliant and Jan’s take on Regina Battenberg is just fab!

The Not So Secret Emails of Coco Pinchard was the first book I wrote, and it was such a struggle and a feat of endurance to just get to the end and finish. It took almost three years! I’d never written a book before, and I was trying to fit it in around working, and then being unemployed. When I finished it I managed to get a literary agent who submitted it to every major publishing house, only for it to be rejected by them all – and then for the agent to fire me too!

The manuscript then sat in a drawer for two years, and it was only when Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing came along that I was persuaded to upload it and I’m so glad I did! It’s been such a journey of ups and downs, but the series has now had over HALF A MILLION Kindle downloads! Seeing how readers love the series, and being in a position to produce  audiobooks of the series exactly how I want them, makes me feel so lucky and blessed. Thank you to everyone who has taken Coco Pinchard into their hearts, and kept asking for more! I can’t wait to hear what you think of Coco in audio!

Rob 🙂

P.S And there will be more Coco Pinchard books, she is merely on hiatus. I always planned for her to have a few years break to allow for ***Spoiler alert*** Little Adam to grow up a bit (in the world of Coco, he will be five years old in August!) ***End spoiler*** I already have a cracking story in mind!

If you want to be the first to hear when each audiobook is released, and about future book releases, please consider signing up to my reader’s club:

‘Last Breath’ cover reveal!

Erika’s back! I’m VERY excited to share with you the cover and product description for ‘Last Breath‘ Detective Erika Foster Book 4!
It’s been very difficult to keep this quiet over the past few weeks! Especially when so many of you have been messaging to ask when the fourth Detective Erika Foster book will be published.

He’s your perfect date.  You’re his next victim.

When the tortured body of a young woman is found in a dumpster, her eyes swollen shut and her clothes soaked with blood, Detective Erika Foster is one of the first at the crime scene. The trouble is, this time, it’s not her case.

While she fights to secure her place on the investigation team, Erika can’t help but get involved and quickly finds a link to the unsolved murder of a woman four months earlier.  Dumped in a similar location, both women have identical wounds – a fatal incision to their femoral artery.

Stalking his victims online, the killer is preying on young pretty women using a fake identity.  How will Erika catch a murderer who doesn’t seem to exist?

Then another girl is abducted while waiting for a date. Erika and her team must get to her before she becomes another dead victim, and, come face to face with a terrifyingly sadistic individual.

Gripping, tense and impossible to put down, Last Breath will have you on the edge of your seat racing to the final dramatic page.

Last Breath is now available to pre-order, and it will be published on Wednesday April 12th 2017 in ebook, paperback, and audiobook – Rob 🙂

The Girl in the Ice sells ONE MILLION copies!

I’m over the moon, gobsmacked, stunned, and so happy to hear from my fabulous publisher Bookouture that The Girl in the The Ice has now sold ONE MILLION copies.

This time last year I was nervously gearing up for the book launch, and worrying how readers would take my change of direction from writing romantic comedies to crime thrillers.

I never dreamed I would sell so many books in such a short time. The Erika Foster Series: The Girl in the Ice, The Night Stalker and Dark Water have now sold over 1.4 million copies and will be published in 25 languages. Now people are surprised to hear that I also write romantic comedies.

I have so much to be thankful for, and I know I say this over and over, but thank you. YOU the readers are the most important people. When I started out as a writer and self-published my first book, I saw just how powerful word-of-mouth can be. There was no money for marketing, and no one outside my twenty-five followers on Twitter knew who I was, but slowly I saw my books being talked about and recommended.

So I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all, readers new and old, and to make a solemn promise that I will continue to write the best books I possibly can for you all. If I keep doing that, I know I can’t go wrong.

Rob x

Thank you for an amazing 2016

The boy on the ice - larking about on the frozen lake!

Happy New Year!

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of The Girl in the Ice, The Night Stalker and Dark Water and for making 2016 such an incredible year.

I never dreamed that I would publish three best selling crime thrillers in one year, that I would have a number one bestseller in the USA, hit number one on the Wall Street Journal best seller list. That I would sell a million copies, that I would win an award at the Harrogate Crime Festival, be a 2016 Goodreads Choice Award Nominee, or that I would see my books translated into 24 languages.

I’ve thought of myself as a writer for the past twenty years, but being able to do it as my full time job has taken just as long. I’ll never take for granted the support of all my incredible readers, and all the equally incredible reviewers and book bloggers who give up their time to write so passionately about books.  Thank you, and I wish everyone a very Happy New Year, and a safe, healthy and prosperous 2017!

Miss Wrong and Mr Right is coming to Bookouture!

Hello there everyone, just taking a quick break out of my writing schedule… Right now I’m cracking on with the fourth Erika Foster novel 🙂

I’m pleased as punch to tell you that my romantic comedy, Miss Wrong and Mr Right is being re-issued by my fabulous publisher, Bookouture. It’s the same novel, no additions or subtractions, but it has a new cover and product description, and it will now be sprinkled with a little Bookstore magic… It will also be available via all retailers, a first for one of my romantic comedies, as well as in paperback and audio.

Miss Wrong and Mr Right was originally self-published in 2015, and went on to hit the top #10 position in the UK Amazon store. It also reached the number one spot in Amazon Australia! I feel like I say this all the time, but it needs to be said as much as possible. THANK YOU to all the wonderful book bloggers and readers who took a chance and read this book and helped to spread the word 🙂

Miss Wrong and Mr Right is inspired by the time I spent living in London as an actor, it also asks the question, Can you have a second chance at first love?

I first met my future husband Ján at a time when I was in another relationship, and he was living in another country. I remember how devastated I felt when I thought I had lost him and missed my chance. Thankfully, the wheels of fate kept turning and our paths crossed a few years later when the time was right. I wanted to explore this in a novel, and Miss Wrong and Mr Right was born. There is also a comedy grandmother, the type of character I love writing too! Anyway, I will stop rambling now. Here is the brand new cover and product description – Rob x

‘Will have you laughing your head off…an excellent romantic comedy.’ Rachel’s Random Reads

‘This is men,’ said Gran. ‘When they vant you, but you don’t vant them, they stay. But let them know you vant them, they no longer need you, and they go! It’s like that movie, Nanny McPhee.’

Natalie Love has worked hard to have it all. She runs a successful London theatre that’s about to host one of Hollywood’s leading stars, Ryan Harrison. She’s pretty sure she’s found her man in yoga boyfriend Benjamin, despite his annoying habit of saying Namaste! every time he speaks. And her eccentric, glamorous Gran is always on hand to offer sage advice and steaming bowls of goulash.

Life in the bright lights of London has always been Natalie’s escape from her chaotic country family in rural Devon and Jamie, the childhood sweetheart she left at the altar fifteen years ago. Until he turns up at her theatre door…

Jamie is in town producing a West End show and with rivalry suddenly clouding old feelings, this isn’t quite the reunion Natalie was expecting.

Will Benjamin prove to be Natalie’s perfect match? With Ryan turning her head, Natalie is more confused than ever. And what about Jamie – could he be her second chance at first love?

Charming, hilarious and totally unputdownable, Miss Wrong and Mr Right will put a huge smile on your face and keep you guessing who Natalie’s ‘Mr Right’ is until the very last page.

What people are saying about Miss Wrong and Mr Right:

‘I just love Robert Bryndza’s writing. He creates great characters and the funniest situations which could well have you laughing aloud! For all its humour, there is a lot of emotion in this book too…I felt that these were totally believable characters who I’d love to read more about and many of the funny situations could actually happen.’ Portobello Book Blog

‘When it comes to writing about family life and all the palava, Robert does this very well. They feel like real people…He writes great romantic comedy that you want to read again and again.’ Books and Authors UK

I found myself smiling continually…Robert Bryndza brings a wonderful turn of phrase to some of this characters, and Natalie’s Hungarian gran is a real tonic, and one of my favourite characters…some of what she comes out with will have you laughing your head off…an excellent romantic comedy.’  Rachel’s Random Reads

One of my favourite things about Robert’s writing is how he creates these bold, hilarious and massively entertaining characters…When I had Miss Wrong and Mr Right in my bookish hands I was PROPERLEY LAUGHING. His writing is just so funny, yet natural at the same time which I think is all part of its appeal.’  Bookaholic Confessions

‘I really enjoyed Robert Bryndza’s writing style, it was so easy to fall into the story and forget about reality for a bit…thoroughly entertaining, wonderfully well-written and simply great romantic comedy that I can recommend to any chick lit fan looking for their next read; you won’t be disappointed!’ A Spoonful of Happy Endings

Charming, engaging, and clever! This is a really great contemporary romance…a story about friendship, family, self-identity, and happiness. The writing is precise. The plot is smart, flirty, laugh-out-loud funny, and full of spirited hijinks and mishaps. But most remarkable of all is the extraordinary characterization. The characters are unique, quirky, lovable, and the witty banter and dialogue between them is exceptional.’ What’s Better Than Books

The perfect read to bring lightness and laughter into your life.’ By The Letter Book Reviews

Dark Water cover reveal!

Dear Friends,

I’ve had to keep this under wraps for what feels like ages, so I’m THRILLED to reveal the cover and product description for the third novel in my Detective Erika Foster crime thriller series. It’s called Dark Waterand it’s now available to pre-order!

DARK WATER 1 adj‘Beneath the water the body sank rapidly. She would lie still and undisturbed for many years but above her on dry land, the nightmare was just beginning.’

When Detective Erika Foster receives a tip off that key evidence for a major narcotics case was stashed in a disused quarry on the outskirts of London, she orders for it to be searched. From the thick sludge the drugs are recovered, but so is the skeleton of a young child.

The remains are quickly identified as eleven-year-old Jessica Collins. The missing girl who made headline news twenty-six years ago.

As Erika tries to piece together new evidence with the old, she must dig deeper and find out more about the fractured Collins family and the original detective, Amanda Baker. A woman plagued by her failure to find Jessica. Erika soon realises this is going to be one of the most complex and demanding cases she has ever taken on.

Is the suspect someone close to home? Someone is keeping secrets. Someone who doesn’t want this case solved. And they’ll do anything to stop Erika from finding the truth.

From the million-copy bestselling author of The Girl in the Ice and The Night Stalker, comes the third heart-stopping book in the Detective Erika Foster series.

Thank you to everyone who has enjoyed the series so far, and taken the time to get in touch, comment, tweet, facebook and write product reviews! Your wonderful support is never taken for granted, and I love reading your messages. Thank you! I hope you enjoy Dark Water,  as much as I enjoyed writing it.
